Junna Ro
University of California, Head of Strategic Legal Initiatives, Managing Counsel
Junna Ro is a seasoned legal and compliance executive with experience in tech, insurance, and higher ed. She has advised on corporate governance, transactions, compliance, employment, data privacy, and regulatory risk across Fortune 500 companies, high-growth startups, and complex public institutions. Junna’s background also includes scaling legal and compliance functions, leading diverse teams, and navigating organizations through significant transitions such as acquisitions, establishing public company controls and governance post-IPO, and driving enterprise risk initiatives. Junna currently leads strategic legal initiatives as an advisor to the General Counsel at the University of California Office of the President (UCOP), which serves as the headquarters for the UC system's 10 campuses, six academic health centers, and three affiliated national labs, and oversees its $54 billion budget. In this role, Junna works to promote UC’s mission by advancing critical strategies aimed at increasing the impact and effectiveness of UC Legal and its 300 person team systemwide, and to amplify UCOP’s strategic objectives for the University and the community at large. Prior to her role at UCOP, Junna was General Counsel and Head of People at Metromile (NASDAQ: MILE), a $110M publicly-traded, digital insurance platform offering pay per mile auto insurance, where she led all aspects of its legal and human resources functions and successfully led the company through acquisition. Junna also served as VP, Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer for AAA (CSAA Insurance Group), a top household brand and one of the top 20 personal lines property & casualty insurance groups in the U.S. with over $5B in direct written premium. Prior to AAA, she served as Corporate Counsel for Symantec and VERITAS Software in Silicon Valley. Junna serves on the boards of CalNonprofits Insurance Services and Taproot. She also sits on the advisory council for the Asian Pacific Fund. She previously served on the board for SF Community Boards, Bay Area Ethics & Compliance Association, the National Association for Diversity in Compliance, and the Korean American Bar Association of Northern California. Junna was selected to join the 2018 California Issues & Trends cohort of Leadership California, and is a member of the Council of Korean Americans, NAPABA, AABA, Bay Area Asian American General Counsel Network, HiPower, and the Women’s General Counsel Network. Junna earned her JD from Santa Clara University School of Law, and her BA in Political Science from UCLA. She holds a CIPP/US privacy certification and is admitted to practice law in California.
