Jorge Sanz

AI Governance and Technology Innovation, IBM

Dr. Jorge Sanz works in IBM Research, based out of San Jose (California), focusing on AI applications, the intersection between digital technologies with regulatory compliance, and as chief innovation officer for financial services. He has over 30 years of experience in industry working with global corporations in manufacturing, pharma, telecom, banking, asset management and government, while living in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. In the last years, Jorge has been working on legal and regulatory challenges with Generative AI Models in firms, data governance, ethics, and technology for supporting key compliance (substantive and procedural) around the adoption of Machine Learning in enterprises.

Jorge has worked in these four geographies as a recognized innovation leader, digital technology and operational process expert. He has developed public-private partnerships in Europe with different agencies in pursuing new services through data science and business analytics. He worked on different public initiatives involving monetary authorities in Asia-Pacific. He founded and led two centers on regulatory technologies and innovative digital solutions, covering a wide range of domains, including data monetization and privacy.

Jorge also held academic positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as Full Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He was Full Professor in Computing and Business Schools at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Founding Director of NUS Business Analytics Centre, while he also taught in the MBA and Executive Education Programs working with boards and CxOs. He founded the first applied centre in Luxembourg on Finance Innovation and Regulatory Systems and Technology for government.

In 2016, he received a Corporate Award from 17 headquarters in Singapore for “Leadership, Innovation and Contribution to Operations in Asia-Pacific”. In October 2018, Jorge got a Corporate Award from 11 companies in Europe for “Thought-Leadership in Digital Transformation, Innovation in Analytics and Collaboration with our Operations in Europe”. These included some of the most prominent corporations and government agencies.

Jorge’s formal university education is in three areas: Computing, Law, and Compliance. He has over 150 refereed publications and invited contributions, as well as key notes and lectures. He is a Fellow of the IEEE Society for his contributions to digital systems in different industries.
